Microsoft have developed a new version of the Kodu Game Lab, a visual programming language that lets children as young as 5 build a basic computer programme for the PC and X-box.

They have also launched a Kodu Cup Competition to spark interest in intermediate and high school aged children.

If you are interested in STEM learning then you can also check out similar offerings from other educators/companies including MIT and Google:

• Scratch from MIT Media Lab (I have used this and it's very easy to teach if/then statements and loops, etc). Plus it runs on Macs and PCs
• App Inventor from Google - use building blocks to create Android applications for all those keen to be the app inventor of the future
• LEGO Mindtsorms / NXT - great for those wanting to compete in the FIRST Lego League
• Alice; Small Basic; Arduino (similar to C++ and involves electronics too) and Squeak
